Jonas' Baptism

Today Jonas was baptised a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and my aunty heart could not be any more proud! Seeing my brother baptise his oldest son filled me with so much joy.

They are so adorable and I am so so glad that they chose to do the baptism here and not in QLD as I would have been devastated to not be a part of it.

So cute!

My brother and his little family.

It was another wonderful selfie opportunity with the boys while we waited outside afterwards.

Jared had organised for a friend of his to take family photos and they took another snap of all the available grandkids with my parents. Love it.

I then had the joy of driving all the boys back to Jared and Donna's for lunch. They were so funny, with so many giggles.

Because it was Easter Sunday as well, we had these gorgeous Slovenian traditonal dyed eggs that Katja and her mum and the boys had painted the day before. They looked so good!

My offering for the day was this Minecraft (by Joseph's suggestion) Birthday cake for Jonas. The drip sure as heck wasn't perfect, but it was perfect enough to make this eight year old happy!

Look at that smile! It was worth every second of work that went into it.

Happy baptism day to our fave little dude. He was so happy.

Best day.

madeline's ctr ring

when madeline turned 8, doug and i gave her a ctr ring to wear. many people in our church wear a ctr ring, a small shield that stands for "choose the right." it has rarely left her hand since and she was sure to mention it to her teacher that year to ensure that there wouldn't be an issue with the school dress policy as it is quite strict and does say that jewellery other than small earrings are not allowed, with the exception of items worn for cultural or religious significance.

this year however, a lot of the girls in her class have been caught out with all kinds of jewellery on, plus nail polish which is also against the rules. madeline was caught in the classroom blitz and asked to remove her ring which thankfully she did without argument even though it upset her.

her mature, level headed response allowed me an opportunity to email with her teacher and explain our religious beliefs and the reason behind the ring, which was wonderful for me. we have been told to plant little seeds wherever we go and leave things better than we found them and this was my chance to do so.

choose the right, when a choice is placed before you
in the right, the holy spirit guides
and its light is forever shining over you
when in the right your heart confides

choose the right, choose the right
let wisdom mark the way before
in its light, choose the right
and god will bless you evermore

be not weary in well doing

the weirdest thing happened to me this week. i have been feeling the burden of anxiety crushing me down so hard, and really feel personally attacked by two people i know, who are meant to be friends. it became worse and worse until it was eating away at me and i couldn't bear it. during this, i kept having constant inspiration for things i could speak about if i had an assignment for sacrament meeting. i even mentioned it to doug, who was like yeah okay jade. but then came the miracle. a few hours after i mentioned it to him, i got a message from a member of our bishopric, asking me to speak this sunday, with less than a weeks notice!

it was so unbelievable. i knew for sure then, that the thoughts and feelings i was having were definitely for a reason. he had thought of someone and even called them, only to know it was me he needed to ask, and his wife had had the same impression when he asked her who he should call. this is not coincidence, this is absolutely inspired. so i started writing and it all came so easily. it's about the times that life isn't easy. because sometimes it's what people need to hear.

******************************************

Good afternoon Brothers and Sisters. Today I would like to speak on something a little different. Being weary in well doing. This weeks Come Follow Me readings have a pretty clear message of repentance and forgiveness. In Section 64 of the Doctrine and Covenants, there’s a verse that really sticks out. Verse 33 reads: “Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.”

In response to all the quarrelling and unrepentant Saints, Jesus Christ commands the Saints to repent and forgive one another as they try to build Zion. Do we get weary in well-doing? Absolutely. The footnotes that accompany the word “well-doing” are benevolence, good works and self sacrifice. It reminds me of all the things we do on the daily to try and build Zion around us, and how weary I become trying to do so, often seeing little or no reward for my efforts.

The end of the verse brings motivation, fortitude and encouragement as Christ reminds us that we are laying a FOUNDATION of a great work, not the entire building, or end product. In time our small efforts will allow great things to proceed, not right now, but gradually over time, possibly even years from now. As we remind ourselves of the fact that we will not see the end result today or tomorrow or maybe even a year from now, our expectations of others around us sometimes need to be put in check, and we realise that we need to repent of our short comings and forgive more readily, for mistakes and errors as we all continue to learn and come together as we build our little Zion here.

So as we build our little Zion, the most important question is: What am I doing today, to get me where I want to be tomorrow? Am I kind to all? Do I include others? Am I honest and fair? Do I represent the gospel in my words and actions? And most importantly, am I doing my best? The Lord does not expect perfection from us, He only asks that we do our best. As President Gordon B. Hinckley said, "Do your best, it will all work out."

Sometimes our best may feel as though it is not much to offer. In the world we live in today, there are so many pressures around us, eating at us and trying to make us feel less than worthy. Pressures to be the perfect spouse or parent, career pressures and all of the pressures we put on ourselves. The Lord only wants us to do the best we can, but so often we push ourselves to do so much more. This is when we can become weary in well-doing. By communicating regularly with the Lord in prayer, we are able to have a clear impression on what is important and required of us, which allows us to be attentive to the things that matter most. Blessings come as a result of seeking and heeding the promptings of the Holy Ghost. President Lorenzo Snow said, “This is the grand privilege of every Latter-day Saint … that it is our right to have the manifestations of the Spirit every day of our lives.” End quote.

President Russell M Nelson said, “The privilege of receiving revelation is one of the greatest gifts of God to His children. Through the manifestations of the Holy Ghost, the Lord will assist us in all our righteous pursuits. Whatever our place in life, we can pray to our Heavenly Father and receive guidance and direction, be warned about dangers and distractions, and be enabled to accomplish things we simply could not do on our own. If we will truly receive the Holy Ghost and learn to discern and understand His promptings, we will be guided in matters large and small. I promise that as you continue to be obedient, expressing gratitude for every blessing the Lord gives you, and as you patiently honour the Lord’s timetable, you will be given the knowledge and understanding you seek. Every blessing the Lord has for you—even miracles—will follow. That is what personal revelation will do for you.” End quote.

When we turn to the Lord in prayer and become in tune with Him, we will often receive unexpected, even what we might consider unusual promptings. To do that something we wouldn’t usually do. To go somewhere out of our way, to message someone we don’t know well or haven’t had contact with in a long time. The Lord hears our prayers and it is often through someone else that He meets our needs. President Monson spoke many times of how one should “never, ever postpone following a prompting.” I find if I do not act immediately, I will find out later why I should have and the reason the Lord spoke to me at that time. If you have ever doubted if that small push came from the Lord, or your own head, move on it as though the Lord himself sent you a text with instructions.

Do we check in with others? People who we know and love, who may be feeling hurt or forgotten? When someone has suffered grief or loss in their life, these feelings remain for some time, sometimes for always. Be the one to remember occasions and check in with these people. Sometimes they may feel angry with the Lord for their trials, and to feel His love brought by the arms of another can allow their broken hearts to begin to heal. Reaching out to lift another can be as easy as a message, an email, sending a favourite scripture or a story you have read – or for you cool people out there, sharing a meme.

Some of us will unfortunately experience infuriating unfairness in our lives. Elder Renlund spoke at length about it at the last general conference and explained it perfectly. Some unfairness just cannot be explained and that is what makes it infuriating. Unfairness comes from living with bodies that are imperfect, injured, or diseased. Mortal life is always going to be unfair. Some people are born in wealth and safety; others are not. Some have loving parents; others do not. Some live many years; other will pass away with so many years unlived, leaving their families to mourn and wonder on what could have been. And so the list goes on. Others make hurtful mistakes even when they are trying to do good. Some choose not to prevent unfairness when they had the chance to do so. Distressingly, some individuals use their God-given agency to hurt others when they never should. Sometimes being kind to everyone is hard. Especially when that kindness is not returned. When showing kindness may be towards those who may not deserve it or people who have offended you or hurt you, despite their best intentions. It would so easy if things had have been different. If we could have just forced people to do the right thing. But we fought to be here, in this time, using our God given agency. In these times we need to remember the words of the Savior and do good to all men. We are reminded in Matthew 5:44 “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”

Elder Renlund said, and I quote “Different types of unfairness can merge, creating a tsunami of overwhelming unfairness. My heart aches for those who face such unfairness, but I declare with all my aching heart that Jesus Christ both understands unfairness and has the power to provide a remedy. Nothing compares to the unfairness He endured. It was not fair that He experienced all the pains and afflictions of mankind. It was not fair that He suffered for my sins and mistakes and for yours. But He chose to do so because of His love for us and for Heavenly Father. He understands perfectly what we are experiencing.” End quote.

In times such as these it is easy to feel weary in well doing. It is hard to see that others may need your help, when we may feel that we need help so desperately ourselves. But I know, first hand, that the greatest peace comes from service in these times of grief and pain. During my time within this ward, I have watched others in the depths of despair find sanctuary in serving those who they felt were in greater need than themselves. They are laying a foundation of a great work. Those who give when they have nothing or feel as though they have nothing, are truly blessed for their efforts. As President Nelson said, “The Lord loves effort and effort brings rewards. We keep practicing. We are always progressing as long as we are striving to follow the Lord. He doesn’t expect perfection today. We keep climbing. As in times past, our journey does indeed take effort, hard work, and study, but our commitment to progress brings eternal rewards.” End quote.

It takes great courage to be a man or woman of integrity when those around you forsake gospel principles. There will always be people around us who are not doing the right thing. Who you may secretly want to force to do the right thing. But try as you may, they don’t, they can’t and they won’t. That isn’t the Lords plan. The Lords plan allows each of us to make our own decisions. He fought for that plan. We fought for that plan. Christ died for that plan. And what he asks of US is simply that we do our best. What others do doesn’t matter. WE DO OUR BEST.

People have always been against the church and being dedicated and faithful, especially in these latter days. Elder Bruce R. McConkie wrote: “There are … millions of sincere and devout persons who disbelieve, oppose, and openly fight the Book of Mormon. … What is it about some words on a printed page—all of which are clean and uplifting and pertain to historical and doctrinal matters—that arouses such violent antagonism?

“Men ordinarily do not rise up to fight the Bible; they do not organize mobs and incite them to shed the blood of others because such persons believe in the scripture of the Old World. … The violent opposition to the Book of Mormon is one of the great evidences of its divinity. If it were not of God, Lucifer would not overly concern himself with it.” End quote.

We may spend our entire lives defending our beliefs to those who cannot and will not understand. But be not weary in well-doing. Being a strong and faithful church member is hard. Seeing others not be that is harder. Feelings of anxiety creep in. We feel less than we are. We can feel like we are running in circles. But the Lord sees us. He sees us and our efforts and knows our hearts. As President Henry B. Eyring said, “If you are on the right path, it will always be uphill.” We were given a promise of great joy, but never told that it would be easy, simply that it would, in the end, be worth it.

In 1975 President Ezra Taft Benson gave a talk entitled “We seek which is praiseworthy.” Though given long before my birth, I feel as though he spoke clearly of “not being weary in well doing.”

Our task is to stick with the kingdom, to not let anything or anybody disaffect or sour us toward that great gift that Christ has given us—his Church. The Church is true. Keep its laws; attend its meetings; sustain its leaders; accept its callings; get its recommend; enjoy its blessings. … Each week we make a solemn covenant to be like Him and take him for our leader, to always remember him in everything and keep all of his commandments. In return he promises to give us his spirit.

President Benson said and I quote ”Just a few years ago, we knew our Elder Brother and our Father in heaven well. We rejoiced at the upcoming opportunity for earth life that could make it possible for us to have a fullness of joy like they had. We could hardly wait to demonstrate to our Father and our Brother, the Lord, how much we loved them and how we would be obedient to them in spite of the earthly opposition of the evil one.

And now we’re here—our memories are veiled—and we’re showing God and ourselves what we can do. And nothing is going to startle us more when we pass through the veil to the other side than to realize how well we know our Father and how familiar his face is to us. And then, as President Brigham Young said, we’re going to wonder why we were so stupid in the flesh.

God loves us. He’s watching us, he wants us to succeed, and we’ll know someday that he has not left one thing undone for the eternal welfare of each of us. If we only knew it, there are heavenly hosts pulling for us—friends in heaven that we can’t remember now, who yearn for our victory. This is our day to show what we can do—what life and sacrifice we can daily, hourly, instantly bring to God. If we give our all, we will get his all from the greatest of all.” End quote

We are all quite simply attempting to lay our own little foundation here, in our personal corner of Zion. May we take heart, lift each other and be not weary in well doing.

I know of the blessings that await the faithful. I take comfort in my family being eternal and knowing that those that we have lost in this short time we experience here on earth, will be with us again, never to be parted. I know that the Saviour suffered for us, that all will be made right in the next life. I know that the Lord knows our hearts and our struggles, but loves us all the same, more than we can ever know.

april 2021 general conference wrap-up

every year after general conference is over, i follow along with this wonderful challenge that you can find here on facebook. i find that i can take in so much more and learn much more than i do when just listening along to all of it for two hours at a time.

this time around was especially helpful because i hadn't even had a chance to watch any of it at all with the funeral and everything going on after dougs mum passed away. this way, i had the chance to enjoy the talks one by one and take them in and some of them (well, all of them really! but some in particular) really spoke to me. i was in tears within moments of hearing sister abuerto's talk "the grave has no victory" after everything that has happened in our lives recently and president oaks talk "what has our saviour done for us" was so wonderful. "infuriating unfairness" by elder renlund was incredible, such a wonderful perspective, but my favourite was absolutely "why the covenant path" by elder christofferson. what an amazing talk. as you can see, day 40 of the challenge was to share a talk with someone not of our faith. i know a wonderful guy who i used to work with, who is a very devout catholic, who enjoys sharing religious beliefs with me, so this one was perfect for sharing with him.

i really enjoyed all of the conference and hearing the talks one by one. i feel so uplifted by the words spoken, knowing they are modern day scripture and carefully thought of for our time. what a blessing it is to know the lord still speaks to us. the heavens have never fallen silent, because god loves his children. he always has and he always will.

honesty: a primary lesson

my turn for the primary lesson again this week - and after having a look at the options in this weeks "come follow me" i decided on honesty. such a good topic and it was so fun to do with the kids.

we started with the letters h o n e s t on the board, each on a different piece of paper, all in a muddled up order and picked children at random to come and unscramble them. we ended up with some pretty funny almost words and had a good laugh. eventually two of the older girls worked it out and we moved on.

first of all, we talked about what honesty is: an honest person loves truth and justice. he is honest in his words and actions. he does not lie, steal or cheat. then we read the 13th article of faith together:
we believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed we may say that we follow the admonition of paul - we believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. if there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

honesty is so important. telling the truth and living the truth are important. but during this lesson i said to the kids, i am going to let you do something your parents would never allow you to do, which definitely got their attention. i then asked the kids to tell me a lie. like a straight out big unbelievable lie. i said that if they told me one, they'd know exactly what not to do - and they looooved it. i got things like "i gave alcohol to a baby" (what the heck?!), "i hate cats" and from the teachers who had me laughing so hard "i am 21 years old" "i'm not married" and my favourites - madeline "i hate bts" (her current favourite band) and mine "i can't stand dominique pinker" joseph was very put out at that one.

my favourite part of the lesson though, was building a tower from upside down plastic cups (5 across the base) and asking a volunteer to pull out the base. to put it basically, when we continue to be dishonest, everything falls apart.

lastly we went back to the letters on the board and thought of some people who started with each letter that were good and honest.
h - helaman
o - president oaks
n - nephi
e - enos
s - samuel
t - teancum

i loved how much the kids got into the lesson and participated. definitely a good choice for the lesson topic.

all saints anglican church

a few weeks ago we were in the bank, opening another account when some photographs on the office wall caught my eye. they were of a beautiful old church and anyone that knows me would know that i am a sucker for an old church. upon asking a few more questions, i found out it was a local one and i made a mental note to make sure i went and had a look one day.

today was the day... as per the guidelines of social distancing, we don't want t be anywhere that anyone else is... so i took the kids for a drive and found said church.

it's in henry street in henley brook at the end of the road - which is at the end of gnangara road over west swan road (going east) and super easy to find, as it's actually the only thing on that road!

although the church is closed under current government restrictions the outside is still amazingly cute as you wander around in the small yard containing old graves. i love cemeteries too of course... so double bonus. i'll be super keen to come and have a look once the church is open again!

according to the information board out front, it is the oldest church in western australia...

another hidden gem, right on our doorstep!

a new calling

well knowing that no one but me ever reads this i am completely safe writing this here... but tomorrow will be my last day in young womens as i am being called to be a counselor in our ward primary presidency! and i actually feel like nephi right now that "i will go and do the things which the lord hath commanded", because this is not something i saw in my future - primary! i always thought i was so much better with the older sisters - so even being called back into young womens at the end of 2018 was a surprise.

i am excited though - i have loved watching all the preparations that go into the primary presentation for the last few years since my kids have been in them and i loooove the primary music - so maybe i am ready to have a turn there haha. plus i will be serving with two close friends so that is always a plus. well kids (especially my two - and three as of next month, when alexander hits nursery!!), watch out 'cause here i come!

christmas sunday

i love christmas sunday. i love that the entire meeting is focused on the birth of the saviour - because that is what christmas is all about. we combined with the other ward that meets at our chapel for today and it was full of beautiful words and hymns.

the best part was being asked to conduct the final hymn, which was a beautifully full arrangement, played as a duet between two pianos of:

Joy to the world

Joy to the world, the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King!
Let ev’ry heart prepare him room,
And Saints and angels sing,
And Saints and angels sing,
And Saints, and Saints and angels sing.

Rejoice! Rejoice when Jesus reigns,
And Saints their songs employ,
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more will sin and sorrow grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He’ll come and make the blessings flow
Far as the curse was found,
Far as the curse was found,
Far as, far as the curse was found.

Rejoice! Rejoice in the Most High,
While Israel spreads abroad
Like stars that glitter in the sky,
And ever worship God,
And ever worship God,
And ever, and ever worship God.

it was sung with so much emotion and it was amazing to be a part of it. i am so grateful to know that the saviour came into the world all those years ago. we are so blessed to know of the truth and be able to be here today to celebrate his birth.

i realised last week that we don't really have any full family photos since alex was born. really this has happened because i am the one who normally takes them, so i'm rarely in them. but today i am. selfie! i love this so much. a pic of our little squad all together and smiling, loving life and each other. i love my little family, seriously so blessed. ♥

we headed off for church in northam as a friend of mum and dads in their branch is raising a baby kangaroo that was separated from its mother. she (as you can see highlighted here) was chuffed beyond belief getting to have cuddles to her hearts content without the standard wildlife park staff hovering hahaha.

mads got in on the action too and was loving it

while doug did what i really wanted to do and had a snooze in the corner with baby. ♥

general conference oct 2018

quote from elder jeffrey r. holland's talk "the ministry of reconciliation" ♥

with baby arriving and all the whirlwind surrounding it, it took me a while to watch the october general conference. being in australia, we have plenty of spoilers before we watch it a week later and wow was there a lot to take in! at this stage (blame it on the new addition to the family) i have only watched the sunday morning session, but my favourite talk was definitely the "role of the book of mormon in conversion" by elder shayne m. bowen telling the most wonderful story of conversion. it is well worth the read (or listen if you please) but here's a part of it below...

As a young missionary going to Chile, I learned a life-changing lesson about the conversion power of the Book of Mormon. Mr. Gonzalez served in a respected position in his church for many years. He had extensive religious training, including a degree in theology. He was quite proud of his biblical expertise. It was obvious to us that he was a religious scholar.
He was well aware of the missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as they went about their work in his home city of Lima, Peru. He always wanted to meet with them so that he could school them in the Bible.
One day, almost as a gift from heaven, so he thought, two missionaries stopped him in the street and asked if they could come to his home and share the scriptures with him. This was his dream come true! His prayers had been answered. Finally, he could set these misguided young boys straight. He told them that he would be delighted to have them come to his house and discuss the scriptures.
He could hardly wait for his appointment. He was ready to use the Bible to disprove their beliefs. He was confident that the Bible would clearly and articulately point out the error of their ways. The appointed night came, and the missionaries knocked on the door. He was giddy. His moment had finally arrived.
He opened the door and invited the missionaries into his home. One of the missionaries handed him a blue book and bore a sincere testimony that he knew the book contained the word of God. The second missionary added his powerful testimony of the book, testifying that it had been translated by a modern prophet of God named Joseph Smith and that it taught of Christ. The missionaries excused themselves and left his home.
Mr. Gonzalez was so disappointed. But he opened the book, and he started to leaf through its pages. He read the first page. He read page after page after page and didn’t stop until late into the afternoon of the next day. He read the whole book and knew that it was true. He knew what he had to do. He called the missionaries, received the lessons, and gave up the life he had known to become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

part of the conference was the huge announcment, that our 3 hour church block will now be reduced to 2 hours as of january 1st next year. wowsers. that blew all of us away... even though there's been rumours galore about it happening for the last year or so, none of us thought it would actually happen! funny thing is, my parents branch has been running on a 2 hour program for the last few years anyway, as their branch is so small that they just didn't have the numbers to run the full thing. so... we are kind of used to it anyway - and now of course dad is making jokes about how much more righteous they are and how the rest of the world is following suit. ;)

i loved this quote from president dallin h. oaks which i think is something we would do well to remember in these times. the lord will not lead us astray and has sent good men to lead his church and guide us home.

i was especially excited to see the announcments of so many new temples, including salvador, my favourite city ever - and auckland new zealand!!

and as usual the memes were flowing fast and strong... this was the best! i was cracking up when i saw it.

general conference? simply the best!

mother’s day ward gifts

mother's day calls for a treat for each of the mothers in our ward... and this year it was up to me to do them again, so i picked something i thought was awesome... in the hopes that everyone would! we have a few sisters in our ward who are strictly gluten free and a few vegans, so i chose yummy cookies (coles ultimate choc-chip cookies, side note, if you haven't tried them, you should - they are delicious!!) that had a gf option (which you can find here), and once it was cookies, it was easy to deviate a little to other cookies and have oreos as well for the vegans, as believe it or not, the plain ones are vegan by ingredient. unexpected seeing as they are the original "milk and cookies" cookie.

i found this gorgeous little printable on pinterest (thank you to whoever made and posted it online!) and printed them two to a photo print at our local big w photo shop

then bagged them into little bags ($1 for 30 from our local reject shop) and tied them off with curling ribbon

so easy... and yum! can't wait to hand them out on sunday. ♥

ministering changes

with all the ministering changes that are going on... i feel like i am going in circles explaining myself to the sisters who ask over and over what's happening.

to my understanding it's not all that different! it's simply more about really getting to know each other and although visits are still encouraged, it's more about being there for other things. getting to know each other better...and being what she needs!

this is the best handout i've found so far... which i found online, so hopefully i can use it for the sisters in our ward sometime in the near future.

easter eggs: an easter lesson

as part of our new sunday meetings in relief society, we hold a council meeting on the first sunday of the month. but because easter fell on the first sunday of the month this year, i made an executive decision and decided we were having an easter lesson instead... which seemed to make the sisters in our ward pretty happy, especially when i busted out a huge box of easter eggs to pass around after the lesson.

you may recall these eggs from last easters fhe with the kids, but i totally used them again (and mums lovely friend has even now made me my own set which i am thrilled about!) and they were just as good with adults as they were with kids, especially seeing as half way through the lesson, the sisters started to participate and make comments! yay!

here are the scriptures and contents for you if you want to make your own set:

1. matthew 26:15 30 silver pieces
2. 3 nephi 11:11-12 & matthew 26:39 sacrament cup
3. matthew 27:24 small chunk of soap
4. mark 14:29-31, 53, 66-72 mini chicken
5. matthew 27:28-29 red fabric
6. alma 11:42 piece of rope

****************

i also wanted to share something i read online last week (which i have seen numerous times before, but this seems an awesome place to post it...) about the burial cloth in the tomb. It's a lovely read.

Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection?

The Gospel of John (20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes. The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly folded, and was placed separate from the grave clothes.

Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, 'They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and I don't know where they have put him!' Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see. The other disciple outran Peter and got there first. He stooped and looked in and saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn't go in.

Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was folded up and lying to the side. Was that important? Absolutely! Is it really significant? Yes!

In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have to understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day. The folded napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew this tradition. When the servant set the dinner table for the master, he made sure that it was exactly the way the master wanted it. The table was furnished perfectly, and then the servant would wait, just out of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the servant would not dare touch that table, until the master was finished. Now, if the master were done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his fingers, his mouth, and clean his beard, and would wad up that napkin and toss it onto the table.
The servant would then know to clear the table. For in those days, the wadded napkin meant, 'I'm done.' But if the master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and laid it beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table, because...The folded napkin meant, 'I'm coming back!'

He is coming back! ♥

relief society birthday party: 176 years old!

last night we had our relief society birthday celebration at the chapel. i am blown away over and over at the amount of effort that goes into preparing these activities as i participate in setting up. this was no exception... our additional meetings co-ordinator had thought of everything and it was a super fun night.

our cultural hall was set up for an informal high tea celebration with vintage china... all sisters who attended brought along a plate of food to share while we provided drinks (crock pot hot chocolate - [recipe here], herbal teas and water bottles with the rs logo. above and beyond around here... haha)

i spoke briefly as we began the evening, of my love for this wonderful worldwide womens organisation. when the relief society was founded in 1842, it was because a need was seen, it was a chance for the women of nauvoo to offer relief, to build up others around them and to be there for each other. i am constantly blown away even in our little corner of the world, with stories of women right here caring for each other, with no thought of reward. it's truly something amazing to be a part of. when emma smith was made the president of the society, she began with the words, "sisters, we are going to do something extraordinary." we still do to this day!

we then watched this short video from youtube, entitled "something extraordinary" before the fun began!

we had fun and games galore as the night went on, including a designated photobooth area, minute to win it games (trying to slide an oreo from your forehead into your mouth, pull all the tissues from a tissue box, stack some metal nuts with a straw, move m&ms from one bowl to another with a straw and who could blow the biggest bubblegum bubble, they were hilarious!) and a round of speed friendshipping (questions below, also hilarious), with two people moving each time from table to table so that less mobile sisters were able to remain seated.

and last but not least, much to my amusement, our additional meetings co-ordinator had actually gone ahead with her joke of the evening, we played "pin the pearl earring on the relief society president. please have a laugh at the below photo of me trying to pin an earring on myself.

honestly, look at this, so much effort... everything was just so.

little relief society decorated cupcakes...

and a beautifully decorated white mudcake, which we will be passing around during sundays lesson. i am sure it will keep the sisters happy...

it was an amazing evening... i am so blessed to be a part of something so wonderful. ♥
