christmas sunday

i love christmas sunday. i love that the entire meeting is focused on the birth of the saviour - because that is what christmas is all about. we combined with the other ward that meets at our chapel for today and it was full of beautiful words and hymns.

the best part was being asked to conduct the final hymn, which was a beautifully full arrangement, played as a duet between two pianos of:

Joy to the world

Joy to the world, the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King!
Let ev’ry heart prepare him room,
And Saints and angels sing,
And Saints and angels sing,
And Saints, and Saints and angels sing.

Rejoice! Rejoice when Jesus reigns,
And Saints their songs employ,
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more will sin and sorrow grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He’ll come and make the blessings flow
Far as the curse was found,
Far as the curse was found,
Far as, far as the curse was found.

Rejoice! Rejoice in the Most High,
While Israel spreads abroad
Like stars that glitter in the sky,
And ever worship God,
And ever worship God,
And ever, and ever worship God.

it was sung with so much emotion and it was amazing to be a part of it. i am so grateful to know that the saviour came into the world all those years ago. we are so blessed to know of the truth and be able to be here today to celebrate his birth.

a talk on motherhood

i was approached by a bishopric member a few months ago and asked to speak about motherhood. i spent so much time thinking about what it is and what it isn't, but this was my final talk - i just missed one thing, which came to me the minute i sat down afterwards.

jill churchill once said: "there is no one way to be a perfect mother,
but a million ways to be a good one." ♥

***************************

Today I’ve been asked to speak about motherhood. This is probably the fourth talk I’ve been asked to give on motherhood, my first when I was pregnant with Madeline, so I’m pretty sure it’s one of two things. I’ve either got this on lock and am about to tell you all just how it’s done, so listen up! Or the more likely possibility, I’m doing a rubbish job and need to keep researching… which I have done over the past few weeks to put this talk together.

One of my friends asked me a few months ago if being a Christian made it easier to love your children when they are misbehaving, I told her heck no, you just spend a lot more time praying to Heavenly Father for the strength to not kill them. So far he’s given me just enough of that. I did a lot of that this week, when a child who will remain unnamed unplugged my computer not once, but twice in a five minute period and I lost half of my almost finished talk. Gretchen Rubin once said, "The days are long, but the years are short."

So. Motherhood… Motherhood is a partnership with the Lord. We, as women have been given this amazing opportunity to raise the spirit children of our Heavenly Father. It is up to us to guide them in the right pathways and help them to reach their heavenly home. Just personally, I think our most important job as a mother is to prepare our children and have them ready to make decisions that they don’t yet know are coming.

There is a primary song entitled “The Family is of God”, which states: “A mother’s purpose is to care, prepare, to nurture and to strengthen all her children, she teaches children to obey, to pray, to love and serve in the family.” It is so true. Most children learn their first lessons in life from their mothers.

I was blessed with amazing, strong and faithful women in my life. Both my grandmothers had lost a child and felt a pull to the gospel and the promise of eternal families. My mother’s mother had married a severely less-active member of the church, only to have the missionaries knock on her door in the 1960’s when my mother was a child. My grandmother felt something and asked the missionaries to come back... my grandfather was not as keen and said "you do whatever you want to do, but I'm already a member and clearly if I haven't been going for all these years I won’t be rushing off to church..." she persisted in her learning, joined the church and he eventually became active again.

My father’s mother had the missionaries knock on her door and asked them to come in, much to my grandfather’s annoyance. He supported her in her decision to learn more, whilst showing zero interest, but as the missionaries taught her, he moved from the kitchen, to the dining room, to the lounge room doorway, eventually to the lounge and after a few months more he joined them in the gospel. How grateful I am every single day for these two courageous women who stood up and made their choice, regardless of what their husbands thought, teaching their children to love the Lord, and enabling me to have what I have.

Both of my grandmothers died when I was very young so the very few memories I had of them have almost gone... I look forward to the day that I can actually get to know them too. I simply know that they set a fine example for our family with their dedication to attending church, serving within the gospel and their unwavering faith and testimonies. My own mother benefited from their ways and has been a true example of faith and serving others, raising my brothers and I in a strong, gospel centred home. I was lucky enough to choose a husband who had also been raised by another one of these strong women who helped him remain close to the Lord, serve a mission and be ready and waiting for me to arrive.

I have determined to be one of these women too; I am often heard telling my children (much to my own mother’s amusement) that I do not negotiate with terrorists, when they try to get their own way.

As mothers in the gospel, we have to be strong, often defying the ways of the world. In her 2001 BYU address entitled “Knowing Who You Are—and Who You Have Always Been,” Sheri Dew said, “Satan, of course, knows how spiritually potent the knowledge of our divine identity is. He hates women of the noble birthright. He hates us because he is almost out of time, while we are en route to everlasting glory. He hates us because of the influence we have on husbands and children, family and friends, the Church and even the world. It is no secret to him that we are the Lord's secret weapon.”

Elaine S Dalton once said, “If you desire to make a difference in the world, you must be different from the world.” As mothers in the gospel we have the responsibility of teaching our children the right path to walk. In Proverbs22:6 it says, “train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” I was taught things in my home that I now teach my children, simple things such as having personal and family prayer, reading scriptures, going to church, attending the temple, paying tithing, having regular family home evening, all the basic things that help us learn and keep the commandments. As a whole, we need to fill our homes and the lives of our children, with the light of the gospel, while remembering that when the time comes, it will be their choice which path they follow. For this reason, we need to make sure their feet are firmly planted on the right path! Our examples and testimonies can only take them so far, so we as mothers need to make sure we teach the gospel in our homes, ensuring they gain their own testimony, so they will remain faithful in the years to come.

President Monson spoke specifically of this in his final conference address when he said: “If you do not have a firm testimony of these things, do that which is necessary to obtain one. It is essential for you to have your own testimony in these difficult times, for the testimonies of others will carry you only so far. Once obtained, a testimony needs to be kept vital and alive through continued obedience to the commandments of God and through daily prayer and scripture study.”

The things he mentioned can be taught in the home. If we are doing the right things, our children will see and copy us. As Sister Joy D. Jones said, “Children are great imitators, so give them something great to imitate!”

Mothers who know of gospel truths stand strong and immovable. In her 2007 general conference talk “Mothers who know”, Julie B Beck said: “Who will prepare this righteous generation of sons and daughters? Latter-day Saint women will do this—women who know and love the Lord and bear testimony of Him, women who are strong and immovable and who do not give up during difficult and discouraging times. We are led by an inspired prophet of God who has called upon the women of the Church to “stand strong and immovable for that which is correct and proper under the plan of the Lord.” He has asked us to “begin in our own homes” to teach children the ways of truth. Latter-day Saint women should be the very best in the world at upholding, nurturing, and protecting families.

In equal partnership with their husbands, mothers lead a great and eternal organization. These mothers plan for the future. They plan for missions, temple marriages, and education. They plan for prayer, scripture study, and family home evening. They build children into future leaders within the gospel and the world. They do not abandon their plans by allowing social pressure or worldly examples of “parenting” to get to them. Mothers in the gospel are selective about their own activities and involvements, and sometimes even their friendships!, in order to maximize their influence where it matters most, within the walls of their own home. As President Harold B. Lee said, “The most important of the Lord's work that you will ever do will be the work you do within the walls of your own home.”

There are many faithful women who by no choice of their own, will not be given the chance in this life to become mothers. In fact, I think I could safely say that Sheri Dew, who actually has no children of her own, has given some of the most amazing talks about motherhood. In her talk, “Are we not all mothers?” she stated: “We tend to equate motherhood solely with maternity, but in the Lord’s language, the word mother has layers of meaning. Of all the words they could have chosen to define her role and her essence, both our Heavenly Father and Adam called Eve “the mother of all living” and they did so before she had even borne a child.”

Like Eve, we sisters began our motherhood before we were born. Just as worthy men were foreordained to hold the priesthood in this life, righteous women were endowed premortally with the privilege of motherhood. Motherhood is more than bearing children, though it is of course certainly that. It is the essence of who we are as women. It defines our very identity, our divine stature and nature, and the unique traits our Father gave us.

My children have been blessed with many “aunties” (some related and others who are friends that have become family) and even a bonus nanna. Some have children of their own, some do not – and may not. However, their shining example and ability to love them as we do has taught me so much, helping me in turn, to become a better mother. For reasons known only to the Lord, some women are required to wait to have children, perhaps even until the next life. This delay is not easy for any righteous woman. Some of us, then, must simply find other ways to mother. All around us are those who need to be loved and led. We have some amazing examples even right here in our ward, of women who have stepped up and stood in place when there has been someone in need of a mother. Motherhood is brought about not only by being able to carry and birth a child, but also by being an example and helping to raise others to walk the strait and narrow path.

Eve set a pattern for us to follow. In addition to bearing children, she mothered all of mankind when she made the most courageous decision any woman has ever made and with Adam opened the way for us to progress. She set an example of womanhood for men to respect and women to follow, modelling beautiful characteristics which we as women should possess: strong faith, a keen sensitivity to the Spirit, a hatred of evil and complete selflessness. She loved us enough to help lead us. As daughters of our Heavenly Father, and as daughters of Eve, we are all mothers and we have always been mothers. And we each have the responsibility to love and help lead the rising generation. Our young women will learn to live as women of God when they see what women of God look like. What we wear, watch, and read; how we fill our time and our thoughts; how we face trials and temptation, where we find true joy and how we act righteously. We are all mothers in Israel, and our calling is to love and help lead the rising generation through this dangerous life ahead.

Never in the history of the world has there been a greater need for righteous mothers—mothers who bless their children with a sense of safety, security, and confidence about the future, mothers who teach their children where to find peace and truth and that the power of Jesus Christ is always stronger than the power of the adversary. If we do not teach our children to follow Christ, the world will teach them otherwise. No woman who understands the gospel would ever think that any other work is more important or would ever say, “I am just a mother.” If we really want to make a difference in this life, it will happen as we mother those we have borne and those we are willing to bear with. As it happens, one of the greatest blessings of motherhood is, in fact, the other mothers. I am so lucky to have amazing mum friends and so many good examples right here to learn from.

As mothers in Israel, we are the Lord’s secret weapon. Our influence comes from a divine endowment that has been in place from the beginning. We just cannot let the Lord down. And if the day comes when we are the only women on earth who find nobility and divinity in motherhood, so be it. For there is no such thing as just a mother.

The most amazing blessings in my life, are the three children I have been given the opportunity to raise with my husband, in the safety of the gospel. I know of its truth and I want nothing more than for my children to come to learn and know that for themselves. How grateful I am to be a mother in Zion. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

selfie sunday

i realised last week that we don't really have any full family photos since alex was born. really this has happened because i am the one who normally takes them, so i'm rarely in them. but today i am. selfie! i love this so much. a pic of our little squad all together and smiling, loving life and each other. i love my little family, seriously so blessed. ♥

oh my heart!

sorry in advance to anyone that follows my blog, because you're going to be spammed continually with pictures of these three adorable children of ours... but oh my heart! i got them all dressed for church today, looking all christmassy (can't get that hat off of madeline's head haha) and then tried to get a pic of them afterwards, which failed miserably. insert eye roll here...

they were in the car, complaining that i was talking too long and didn't want to cooperate, until i busted out the old, "come over here for a photo, smile and you can have icecream when we get home." they actually raced each other to the seat and then smiled sweetly before joseph groaned, "can we go nooooooow?" i just love them, their smiles and their "vibrant" little personalities.

sundays are for family, fun and most of all - photos! ♥

vintage love

can i just take a minute here to talk about how much i love this dress madeline has on? i picked it up at the local salvos in ellenbrook just after we moved here about 2 years ago. it was absolutely love at first sight and i have (very impatiently) waited for it to fit her! today was the day and thankfully she loves it just as much as i do. it's a genuine vintage dress, complete with a scratchy tulle lining (she wore another favourite skirt underneath it) old labels and buttons and hooks up the back. absolutely perfect and just my thing.

maybe this opshopping is hereditary cause she seems to be picking it up just fine. i found a letter in one of her notebooks to one of my friends who promised her a girls day out soon, including a list of possible options for their day including: we could go opshopping. definitely not my friends thing, but it sounds like it is maddies! ♥

sunday, the best day ♥

sundays can be super hard. to get up, get kids ready, and to get to church on time... then to be really be present, while you're there. doug has been working a lot lately and has done sunday after sunday after sunday. sometimes it's hard!! the kids won't eat their breakfast, don't like the clothes i've picked for them, don't want to get in the car... and i wonder why i bother. but once i am there it always seems to be okay. i guess heavenly father knows i can do this... and will bless me when i put my head down and just do it.

for that reason, this quote from president nelson really stuck out to me from the recent church broadcast (that included the announcement of the new first presidency) "to each member of the church i say, keep on the covenant path

i am trying to keep on the covenant path,
i'm doing the best i can... and that's all i can do! ♥

keep the sabbath day holy

i stumbled across this fabulous printable on pinterest this week and i absolutely love it! part of the pacific region area goals for 2017 was sabbath day observance and i know it's definitely something that we as a family need to work on... we by all means don't do anything to dishonour the sabbath, but i am sure we could respect it a little more than we do.

so... i'm going to print this list and make sure that we do a little better here in the kendall house!

sunday, lovely sunday!

i love sundays. that's no secret. i also love these two little people that sometimes (let's be honest, most of the time) follow me around and drive me crazy. but sometimes it's hilarious... like this morning when i started to cut up brownies for one of the young women coming up to relief society today and they raced up and started hovering like a swarm of flies. oh it cracked me up!

i especially love dressing them up in their finest on a sunday and knowing that i am teaching them the best way i know how, knowing that if i teach my children in their youth, that when they are older that they will not depart from it. to have a love for the lord, for his church and for the scriptures. and hopefully am i doing okay!

sunday in utah!

what an experience today was! church in utah? check!

we had a wonderful morning at one of the cottonwood heights wards with tara and her family. relief society was a bit full on in comparison to what i'm used to in back home in australia (some rather graphic recounts of the suffering of their pioneer ancestors!) but i was delightful all the same.

after church we headed over to the hedges house for lunch and to hang out, where i spent most of my time in an in depth conversation with lauren and aspen about temples... madeline was having the time of her life on the staircase being moana on the side of her boat. my heart was in my mouth most of the afternoon watching her antics, not going to lie!

lisa and the kdis came and collected us in time for dinner and we headed off to the amussens, where we spent some time with her parents, and her twin and boyfriend. it's been so long since i've seen them all and there was so much laughing and fun to be had.

with my favourite twins! ♥

and madeline with her favourite twins

last time we saw michelle was when madeline was just a baby and we took this gorgeous picture (at the top) of them together. today i decided to take the same one and it was totally worth it. oh the memories!

i am loving spending time with friends here and i am going to be so sad when it comes to an end... if only we weren't so far away!

the best dressed kids on the block...

i love sunday for a million reasons, but one of them is being able to dress up my kids and snap cute pics of them to show off. i told madeline that this was the last photo we would be sending to aunty niques before she comes home from her mission (this coming tuesday!!!) and she busted out this gorgeous smile straight away. i love how much she loves her aunty and can't wait to see them reunited.

and this little dude has the cutest face ever. i know he is mine and i know that makes me love him more and possibly even makes me a little biased, but seriously... that smile just melts my heart. i am so so blessed with these two.

i have said it before and i will say it again, over and over, sundays are the best day of the week. i know it's tuesday, but i can't resist sharing this gorgeous pic from a few days ago...

family, faith and photos (it has an f sound, so i am totally counting it!) there is no place i would rather be than with these cuties, at church, recharging before i embark on another week ♥

fill your life with light

i love this quote so much... recently in one of the relief society lessons i did, there was a suggestion of how to guard your home and your family from the dangers of the world. it was quite simply to "fill your life with light!" i have tried so hard to do that, to surround myself with good things... and to surround these little people with good things - or just to surround myself with them!

being a parent can be so hard, especially when you are trying to make sure your children are learning and growing, but learning the good things. there are so many things in todays world that they can pick up so easily and so quickly if i turn my back for even a second... so i need to be trying twice as hard to fill my life with light, to make sure i do the same for them.

train up a child in the way that he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it
-proverbs 22:6

back to the fold

i found todays relief society lesson spoke to me personally. in april of this year i was called as the relief society president of the ward we had moved into just six months ago and oh did i feel overwhelmed. i feel like i could name a dozen women better suited to the calling, who would do a better job than me and wondered why they had chosen me for such a huge calling. what i needed to remember was that the lord calls people not just because we are needed, but because we need to learn and grow. i often feel like i am not doing enough, like there are so many sisters who need me that i've not yet even met, let alone become aware of their needs. but i know that in time i will learn what i need to do, where i am needed and who i need to seek out.

this talk was read during the lesson and it made me feel so much better about my calling and gave me the insight into seeking out those who are lost. the flock will be safe... together.

it's written so perfectly and can be found here

At the age of 23, I was called as a Relief Society president in our married student ward. I remember the inadequacies I felt, coupled with the desire to do my best. I was eager and excited to serve but doubted my ability to be a good leader.

After a few months as the Relief Society president, I felt that I wasn’t doing enough. I wanted to be able to connect with the sisters and be in tune with their individual needs, but I felt that I was coming up short.

I talked with my bishop and expressed my concerns. I explained how I just couldn’t reach all of the sisters I wanted to. I described how I wished that I had five of me to get the job done the way I thought it should be. I tried to keep my concerns light and humorous, but my eyes quickly filled with tears of discouragement. He smiled and offered some of the best leadership advice I have ever received.

“Are you familiar with the story of the shepherd who, upon losing one of his flock, left ‘the ninety and nine’ to find it?” he asked (see Luke 15:4–7). I nodded. “There seems to be so much wisdom in that parable,” he continued. “The shepherd knew that the ninety and nine would be all right if he left them to look for the one lost sheep.”

Then my bishop offered the following advice: “You see, the ninety and nine have a great way of looking after each other when you’re gone. They will buoy each other up and hold together very well. I suggest that you concentrate on the ones who seem lost. The rest will be OK.”

I felt a strong witness that what he had told me was true and that I didn’t need to worry about the entire flock all at once. My purpose was to find those who were lost and to invite them back into the fold. In that way, Heavenly Father’s purposes could be brought to pass, and I could be a tool in His hands.

As I heeded the bishop’s counsel, I felt a greater measure of understanding of how the Lord would have me serve in His kingdom. I also received spiritual fulfilment that strengthened me in my calling because I was serving as the Savior had instructed. Through the power of the Holy Ghost, my bishop had given me a great gift of understanding and insight.

I testify that as we pray and seek inspiration from our priesthood leaders, they will be inspired to show us how to lead in righteous ways.

sunday's and snapchat

yesterdays sunday quote seems particularly appropriate... a rescue? i need to be rescued! my kiddies have discovered snapchat and maddie has even worked out how to open the app and get the filters going. and they are having a blast with it.

my flowerchildren in full force, looking very serious...

and joseph as a puppy. could he be any more adorable if he tried? ♥

lucky they are so cute, makes it hard to get angry with them...

when they were done with my phone, maddie decided to move on to "cooking" in the kitchen and made this amazing piece of bread, leaving a trail of honey and sugar and other things all over the kitchen bench...

i love sundays... what more can i say? ♥

sunday, the best day

i really, really love sundays. in my humble opinion, it's the best day of the week. not that i need an excuse to dress up my children, but it helps that i always get to one day a week... cause dresses and bowties and button up shirts make me so happy.

i am loving being in relief society again after so much time in primary when we were in dianella ward... and am getting so much out of the lessons. we have some awesome teachers here and are so lucky to be taught by them each sunday.

hooray for sunday. the best day ♥

a very big plane

school sores are still lingering... and these kids haven't been the happiest, so i was so thrilled to have a few hours off on sunday morning, when nannaleah and aunty dom took joseph and maddie out, so that one of us didn't have to stay home from church with them. thank goodness for morning and afternoon church in our chapel...

the worlds biggest plane came into perth sunday morning with some mining cargo... so they went to an oval near their house and watched as it got lower and lower and joseph squealed with delight, as he does when he sees anything large that moves.

what a big plane

thank goodness for family... and a few hours off. we love you pinkers! ♥

keep the commandments

our relief society lesson today was about keeping the commandments. it was a great lesson and i must admit i did get a few laughs out of it. one was when someone pointed out that god only gave us 10 rules, surely that isn't too hard. another sister then pointed out the fact that they are the ten commandments, not the ten suggestions which a lot of people in todays world seem to believe. all i could think about was this comic i saw on pinterest a few months ago

what an accurate depiction. i have heard so many people in recent years talking about how the commandments are outdated, obsolete and no longer relevant. none of the above statements are true. our loving father in heaven provided us with these guides to ensure our safety... and by adhering to them we are promised something far greater than we could ever imagine.

keep the commandments keep the commandments
in this there is safety, in this there is peace
he will send blessings, he will send blessings
words of a prophet, keep the commandments
in this there is safety and peace
(lds hymns no. 303)
