the conversion of king lamoni

after 16 long weeks of not attending church, we finally got to go back on sunday. it was strange, but it was nice. we all had to sit on pews that were very well spaced out (pews all the way back in the cultural hall? that's a first!), sacrament tonged into our hands, everyone required to sign in and sanitise on arrival. but it was the same it's always been and it felt so good to be back.

i received a "wonderful" surprise a week or so back, when one of bishops counselors called me and asked me to be our first post covid speaker. i was very surprised, but of course happy to do it. i was given the subject of the conversion of king lamoni and his house and here it is!

*******************

Good morning brothers and sisters. It’s been a hundred and twelve days since we’ve been in the chapel together and a lot of things in the world have changed. A lot of things are still changing, but the truth of the gospel remains the same, which is why we are so blessed to return to this place of refuge amongst the uncertainty outside.

I’ve been asked to speak today about the conversion of King Lamoni and his house, which makes me pretty happy – as it’s one of my favourite stories in the Book of Mormon. Joseph and I love it, him mostly because of Ammon cutting the arms off the robbers, but there is obviously so much more to the story.

Ammon was one of the sons of Mosiah, converted along with Alma the younger, as they went about actually trying to destroy the church. So great was their conversion that an angel of the Lord appeared to them. What an experience that would have been. I mean, I’m not going to lie, there have been occasions where I have wished we could call down an angel to assist with conversion. I know there are plenty of people who could benefit from it and it would make it so easy! The amazing thing is, their conversion was so powerful that they dedicated more than fourteen years of their lives to preaching and ministering unto others to enable them to experience conversion for themselves.

Ammon and his brothers spent several years teaching the Gospel to the Lamanites. Ammon went first to the land of Ishmael. He was captured by the Lamanites and taken before their king, Lamoni. In verse 22 and 23 of Alma chapter 17 King Lamoni asks Ammon if it were his desire to dwell in the land among the Lamanites, or among his people, Ammon said unto him: “Yea, I desire to dwell among this people for a time; yea, and perhaps until the day I die.” The king, impressed, offers him high station, along with one of his daughters, to marry. Ammon refuses, and says “Nay, but I will be thy servant” going instead to serve in the king's household where he is given the job of assisting others in caring for the king's flocks. The thing that really stood out to me here, was that Ammon specifically said “perhaps until the day I die.” He was willing to stay for as long as it took to convert these people to believe in Christ and do what he was called to do.

Within days the king would find out that Ammon was willing to risk his life for him. And there came the opportunity for Ammon to be a witness of God to the king. When caring for the flocks of the king, men came to attack and scatter them. Fellow servants tell him they will be killed if the bandits acquire any of the flock. So, Ammon directs the others to encircle the flock so they will not scatter and then confronts the bandits. He recognises this immediately as an opportunity to establish a relationship of trust, preparing them to listen to his message. He doesn’t shy away, he takes these bandits on! As he is seemingly outnumbered, the thieves attack Ammon. From a distance he kills several with his sling and then in hand-to-hand combat cuts off the arms of every robber who attacks him. Upon returning to the king, the other servants present him with these arms and recall the events. King Lamoni asks of Ammons whereabouts, only to be told that this man is still out, tending to the horses. In verse 10 of chapter 18 it says: “Now when king Lamoni heard that Ammon was preparing his horses and his chariots he was more astonished, because of the faithfulness of Ammon, saying: Surely there has not been any servant among all my servants that has been so faithful as this man; for even he doth remember all my commandments to execute them.” Ammon gained the trust of the king and his servants through service. They were prepared and ready to listen to his message, all because Ammon was willing to serve. After asking many questions and having them answered by Ammon, King Lamoni and many people in his kingdom are converted to the gospel.

Combining kindness and service with bearing witness has great power to change lives. Thousands of times every day members of the Church are watched, by people curious to know something about our lives. Because we are under covenant to be a witness of the gospel, we will try to tell them how the gospel has brought us happiness. What they think of what we say may depend largely on how much they sense we care for them.

Those we meet will feel the love that springs from our long practice in keeping a covenant to “mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort” (Mosiah 18:9). It may not be in hours or days as it was for King Lamoni, but they will feel our love after testing our hearts. And when they find our concern sincere, the Holy Spirit can more easily touch them to allow us to teach and to testify, as it did for Ammon.

Later, Ammon's love and respect for Lamoni also impresses Lamoni's father, the king of all the Lamanites and he too was converted to the gospel. Have you ever had someone ask why you are different? Why you choose to do things for others, unasked or unaided? We as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are taught kindness, to love and to serve from a young age. We watch our parents serve in the church, assist others and teach us to do the same. So many are amazed when they hear our positions in the church are unpaid and often without a monetary reward. But like King Lamoni, this is what leads them to ask questions and have a desire to learn of the truth, because we lead by example.

In this weeks come follow me studies we learnt about how our own testimony can have a far-reaching influence. Though accounts of conversion we read about in the scriptures often involve dramatic events, at their core we usually find it was due to individuals who simply had the courage to speak up and share their witness with others. It’s also mentioned about how a great way to study these events is to look for the far-reaching effects of one person bearing his or her testimony.  Ammon shared the gospel with King Lamoni, who shared it with his kingdom, and his father who shared it with his kingdom. Now if you were to leave this chapel and share it with your neighbour, who shared it with their family, who shared it with their friends, who shared it with their workmates, who told the guys at their local sportsclub, who told their mates at uni, who went home and told their parents, can you even imagine the spread it would create? We need to flood the world with the gospel. To allow every person to hear of it. To follow the example of Ammon and serve, as others observe and are lead to the truth.

Lastly I would just like to touch on the great power of King Lamoni’s conversion. It is spoken about, that it was so strong that he fell to the ground and was still for days. He received such a powerful witness that he was completely overwhelmed by the spirit and unable to rise. Although we may not receive a witness of this extent, conversion is a deeply personal experience and allows us to come to the light of Christ in our own way. Just because we do not have a physical experience of this manner, it does not mean that our testimony is lesser or not as worthy as that of someone else.

As we continue learning and growing within the gospel, may we remember the example we are to others outside of our faith and strive to serve others, that we may be able to share our light and testimony with them, just as Ammon did with King Lamoni.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen

luisa's baby shower

yesterday we celebrated our beautiful friend luisa who will be having a baby boy in just a few weeks! this baby shower has been a long time in the works and during the uncertainty of covid and not being able to organise and book a location, i offered up my house for the day to make sure it could go ahead.

our mates elena and keryn have been working on the day for weeks, constructing a blue and leopard print party. what a wild theme. not something i could picture but they managed it!

they had thought out every last detail, including drinks on arrival

and an epic grazing table with desserts.

i was so blown away, i had not long been home from dropping the kids off to school when luisa's husband and his brother turned up and did the grazing table all by themselves. i am so impressed it's insane. they have the skills mate!

here is our guest of honour and the girls who made it all happen.

and her epic cake (made by my bestie!) it looked incredible.

we laughed, chatted, played games and ate ( alot!) and had a wonderful afternoon.

last but not least, i have to showcase these. mum and i spent hours stitching, turning and constructing these scrunchies for the guests to take home. such a cute idea! totally filing that away for future parties!

i can't wait to meet the little man when he arrives. so exciting!

bestie morning tea

this morning was spent enjoying morning tea at maison st honore with my favourite person before her birthday this weekend. it's been a long time since we have been anywhere with just the two of us, without any running and nutty children. sweet little millie was there, but she was very happy to chill in her pram and gurgle away.

zoom in if you please, to see the absolutely incredible earrings i got her for her birthday. handmade by a friend here in ellenbrook, they are little half pieces of fairy bread! i love them so much that i had to get a pair for myself as well.

well bestie. happy early birthday to you! studies show that if you make it through seven years of friendship, you'll remain friends for life. well, we have known each other 28 years and been best friends for 21 years, so i guess you have earned yourself 3 lifetimes worth of friendship with me! congratulations! love you xx

lolly cake cheesecake

it's our friend keryn's birthday tomorrow. she has been such a wonderful support to steve and oli over the past few years (she and her husband lyndon live next door to them) and we are super grateful and love her very much. so, i wanted to make her a special cake!

she looooves lolly cake, a kiwi dessert made from biscuits, butter, condensed milk, coconut and eskimo lollies and a few years back, i happened upon a recipe for a lolly cake cheesecake! i have made it once before, but don't think i shared it on here (sorry if i have already!) so here it is, so i can make it again if we so desire. you can find the original recipe here.

lolly cake cheesecake

ingredients:
1 packet malt biscuits - crushed
90 g butter
100 mls condensed milk
170g Pascal Eskimos
2 pkts cream cheese (500g)
¼ cup caster sugar
2 teaspoons gelatine (dissolved in 1/4 cup boiling water)
1 cup whipped cream
500g melted chocolate

to make the base:
Stir melted butter and condensed milk over low heat, add chopped Eskimos, and crushed malt biscuits, mix well and press into a spring form tin, refrigerate.

Put cream cheese into a bowl with caster sugar and mix well to combine. Add gelatine dissolved in ¼ cup of boiling water. Fold in whipped cream and then melted chocolate. Mix well and pour into tin. Let set and then decorate with Eskimos and drizzled chocolate. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

the verdict:
oh my gosh. this is so insanely sickly sweet and i am a total sweet tooth. i honestly don't know if i would make it again because you can only eat such a tiny amount without feeling overwhelmed by it. keryn seemed to like it though, so win win!

bathroom inspo

what a freaking nightmare. on our list of to-do's for our house is to completely redo both our bathrooms. the kids one has always smelt slightly musty since we moved in, but smelt wet in the winter months, even when we were not using it. we had a plumber come in and look at the two (as our ensuite has leaked through to the wall behind in the past also) only to find that the two of them were not sealed correctly during the build and are leaking into the rest of the bathroom and house surrounding them.

oh great.

however, (here enters jade the eternal optimist) when we bought the house, the only things that i did not like were in fact the bathrooms and the laundry. just not to my taste at all. so, this gives us a chance to make them something we are happy with! i was totally convinced that i wanted white and grey, but after doing some googling/pinteresting over the last week or so, i am obsessed with green! dark green/white/copper pipes are totally singing to me. now just to get the husband on board.

here's some of the pics i have for inspiration, which i am posting here, so that when we decide on what we are doing and actually finish it, i can look back and see if it's anything like what i currently have in mind!

just be kind

there is so much nastiness in the world at the moment. i can't understand why people need to behave the way they do but there seems to be no end in sight. innocent people have been murdered in the united states, a teenage boy has been killed at the hands of other teenage boys in the eastern states just this week... everything is already crazy from months on end of other issues with covid-19 at the middle and some days this feels as though it is never going to end.

this evening before bed i sat my kids down and told them some things that have been going through my mind. above everything else, be kind. being kind is not a weakness. it is showing strength. look for ways to help and uplift. be the person who helps others. who looks for ways to be better. who talks to people who are left out. who invites others who didn't get included. who volunteers to make the workload lighter. the person who exemplifies christ.

christ taught us to "bear one anothers burdens that they may be light" and more than anything else to love one another. there was no exemptions on this, just love each other. the world is getting darker around us and we need to be the light and lead by example. they listened and asked questions, so hopefully my discussion (let's be honest, it was a lecture) had some impact on them. but honestly from me, to you, if you can choose to be something, choose to be kind. it doesn't cost anything and the rewards are infinite.

booklovers

blessed are the children of the bookworms, for they shall inherit books.

we looove books in this family. we have so many and i love that my kids love them just as much as i do. i feel like i am winning at life when i see them with their heads in a book.

a few weeks ago, we went on a hunt around our local little free libraries and did some exchanging after i had cleaned out our bookshelves ( a regular occurrence withe the amount of books we have)... but then i posted on a local page talking about the ones we knew locations of - only to very happily be told of more!

we now know of the following in our area
- 172 hermitage dr, the vines
- avairy creek playground, aveley
- the jungle park, brabham
- 19 wexcombe way, aveley
- 33 highpoint blvd, ellenbrook
and the only one i am yet to see...
-main playground, whiteman park

we love seeing what is on offer and exchanging books - it is so much fun.

and the most wonderful thing happened the week after! joseph is reading book after book and can hardly wait to find a new one when he's done with the last. i was looking on our local free page and a very kind local posted a bunch of books suitable for him, which she passed on to me - only when i collected them, she had man more waiting for me!

enough for both of the older kids... and then asked me if any of us like harry potter - only to insist i take a copy of the fully illustrated edition, which i have wanted for so long! thrilled doesn't even cover it. i was ecstatic. i can't wait to get into it.

books books books. just give us all of the books!

marlee's trolls cake

i finally got to make my first chocolate overload cake this weekend, a trolls birthday cake for my friends sweet daughter marlee. i had always considered making one but had no good reason, until now. but it was super fun.

i used this recipe that i made jett from next doors birthday cake with, doubled to make four cakes - along with the same icing.

layered with icing as filling, and coated around with it too, before i started adding decorations

grabbed some bits and pieces from kmart (the rainbow straps) coles (twirls, freddos, hundred and thousands biscuits, curly wurlys and coloured pearls) and the reject shop (windmill lollipops) and thew it all on there til it looked good and finished, then added trolls. bobs your uncle. the birthday girl was very pleased, so i was happy!

happy birthday little miss marlee!

anxiety overload

it is not something i go around telling people, so unless you know me really well, you'd probably never know. but i have super bad anxiety. crippling in fact. the last few months and the state of the world around us have certainly not helped. everyone that suffers from anxiety feels it differently, but some days i feel like i have my head in a vice. for me, something little can set me off, like not getting an answer to a text message, realising i have something i didn't do, that something is broken or missing... i really can't pinpoint it, but little things get me going. the worst bit is, the constant analysing of every word i say when a conversation is over. you better believe that if you've ever had a conversation with me and i've been awkward (which i can guarantee you i have, even if you don't think i have been, i do) i will be replaying every word over and over in my head, groaning about what i could have said and done differently.

it is a constant thing. i worry about strange things. if i get a call from someone out of the blue, i worry about what i could have said or done to offend them. it makes me feel like bad things constantly happen to me. it makes it hard for me to have great friendships, unless i really trust people and know they understand me, to be a good mother - cause i am always on edge and struggle to be calm and present even though i love my children madly.

but i am trying every single day to master this and make myself stronger. please have patience with me and try to understand what it is like to live inside my head. because i am trying my hardest.

i have read two great articles in the last few months, that helped me to understand the way i feel and how i can grow and be stronger. so, if you want to know what it's like to be inside my head, have a read of these:
