Sustaining our leaders: a sacrament talk

Sometimes I get super annoyed at the way people sustain someone when they are called to something in the church and then do nothing to help them, or even acknowledge them in their calling. If you sustain someone, you are committing to assist them if so required. I genuinely think some people need a reminder of that, so when I was asked recently to speak in Sacrament meeting, I decided to revisit some information from an old Relief Society lesson I gave years ago. Hopefully it has the desired effect!

*****************

Good afternoon brothers and sisters. Today I’ve felt inspired to speak about sustaining our church leaders.

Pretty much every Sunday a member of the bishopric stands here and reads out callings and releasings at the beginning of our sacrament meeting. We raise our hands to sustain someone who has just received a new calling. Most of the time it’s an automatic reaction. Some Sundays we may not even really listen to the names of the people we are sustaining. It’s simply part of our Sacrament Meeting routine. Despite this failing on our part, it is actually a very sacred action and one we need to do with a thoughtful and prayerful heart. It is a critical motion with eternal consequences and it comes with responsibilities.

President Joseph F Smith said, “It is a serious wrong in the presence of the Almighty for one to vote to sustain the authorities of the Church and then to go away and oppose them and trample under foot the counsels that they give; and we will be judged of the Lord for it.

So when we raise our hand to sustain someone, whether it is the nursery leader or the prophet, what are we really doing? We are not voting. We don’t get to choose who will serve in the calling. That was already prayerfully taken to the Lord by the person who had the authority to do so. We are, instead, agreeing to accept callings or assignments from them if they are in a position to offer them and to help them in any way we can. Our sustaining is a vote of confidence in the person. We are promising to support them in their work and (something I think we should all remember) to speak well of them. We are committing ourselves to accepting that their call came from God.

Sister Terrie Bittner, a writer on the website Mormon Women Stand, said that this truth was brought home for her, one day when she called and asked someone to substitute for her in Primary. This sister admitted that teaching Primary was not her favourite thing (can’t imagine why) but that she had raised her hand to sustain her when she was called, and so, accepting my request for help was part of the promise she had made to God that day. She substituted and worked hard to give the class a wonderful experience. She then went on to say, “ I wondered then if I had ever worked so hard to carry out my covenant to sustain someone in a calling. I believe that is what sustaining someone is—a covenant with God.”

That is something we would all do well to remember when we are extended an assignment or asked to assist with a lesson, an activity or simply just to attend those lessons or activities that people have put so much effort into. Attending them is sustaining too! Please attend activities. SO much work goes into them.

In 1898 whilst serving as the second counsellor in the first presidency, Joseph F Smith said, “It is an important duty resting upon the Saints who … sustain the authorities of the Church, to do so not only by the lifting of the hand, the mere form, but in deed and in truth.”

In D&C 20:65 it says, “No person is to be ordained to any office in this church, where there is a regularly organized branch of the same, without the vote of that church."

We have an opportunity to sustain—support, help, pray for—each of these people in their callings. We indicate our willingness to do so by raising our right hands when their names are read to us in general conference, stake conference, ward or branch conference, or sacrament meeting. Raising our hands is a sign to us, to them, and to the Lord that we will sustain them.

In April 2015, during the sustaining of the church officers in the Saturday Afternoon Session of Conference, several members stood and loudly opposed our first presidency. I remember it well and I was absolutely raging. I remember saying angrily to Doug, how could someone do that? How dare they? Why bother going to conference if you don’t agree with them? That’s the whole POINT of going to conference, to listen to them! But as members of a congregation, we have the right to oppose a calling or a sustaining. I’m certainly not saying we should, but we have the right to! It should still be done by the raising of the hand, certainly not by yelling out- to allow our opinion to be heard by those who are in a position of authority to do so, after the meeting has concluded. We need also remember, that the sustaining vote will be carried by the majority.

Members of the church of Jesus christ of Latter-day Saints, like everyone else, and sometimes even more so, are opinionated people. We will often have more experience than the person called to lead us. We sometimes have personal beliefs that cause us to want things to be done differently than they are. However, once God has approved a calling, we are expected to become humble followers of this person. While this may seem hard or short-sighted, we will someday be the one who is sustained into a calling we are less qualified for. Then we will hope others will be patient and supportive during our time.

Jesus taught us to treat others the way we ourselves want to be treated. The Church is not like the world. We don’t always fill our positions with the most qualified person. (Although with modern politics you have to wonder!) Often the person in the calling is there because there is something he can learn from it. Other times he is there because there is a specific situation or person he can best help, even if he’s less qualified for other parts of the work.

God moves us around to various callings in order to help us grow. We are called to sustain them, whether or not we think they are qualified. Whom God calls; God qualifies. Sustaining people is a covenant we make at the local level. It is also a covenant when we sustain the prophet and the apostles. We covenanted in the waters of baptism and in the temple to follow Jesus Christ and God, and we covenanted to follow the prophet as the Lord’s mouthpiece in our time. To do anything less is to violate our sacred covenants. To do anything less is to decide God made a mistake—and God never makes mistakes.

In his talk Solemn Assemblies, David B Haight said, “When we sustain the President of the Church by our uplifted hand, it not only signifies that we acknowledge before God that he is the rightful possessor of all the priesthood keys; it means that we covenant with God that we will abide by the direction and the counsel that comes through His prophet. It is a solemn covenant.” To do otherwise is dangerous.

Joseph F. Smith said: “Men may become dissatisfied one with another, they may become dissatisfied towards the Presidency, the Quorum of the Twelve, or others, and may say in their hearts, “I do not like such an one; I do not believe he is as good as he should be, he has too many faults and weaknesses and, therefore, I cannot and will not acknowledge his authority, as I have not faith in the man.” Doubtless there are those, too many perhaps, who feel that way, but the trouble is, just because they have become dissatisfied with the individual and harboured feelings of bitterness in their hearts against their brethren, they lose sight of the designs of the Almighty; they turn against the authority of the Holy Priesthood; and through their blindness allow themselves to be led astray, and at last turn away from the Church.”

One of the temple recommend questions is “Do you sustain the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the prophet, seer, and revelator and as the only person on the earth authorized to exercise all priesthood keys? Do you sustain the members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as prophets, seers, and revelators? Do you sustain the other General Authorities and local leaders of the Church?” Please note that it includes local authorities. So whether we agree with their decisions or not, we must accept them and remember these men (and women!) have been called of the Lord and are his mouthpiece. What it all comes down to for me, is “Is the church true?” Of course it is! Then we are safe in the care of our leaders, because the Lord picked them.

You might not like someone that is called to a position in the gospel, especially a position of authority, but you should sustain them anyway. How many times have we said we don’t like someone before getting to know them. I know I am terrible for that… We can do the same, get to know someone and close that gap.

D&C 1:38 warns: “Whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.” There is so much safety in knowing God has provided us with a prophet to guide us through the last days of the world. It is one of His gifts of love to His children and our willingness to follow the prophet He has chosen is our message of how much we love and trust God. It is our testimony in action—and a testimony that is words without action does not have the power to bring us back home to God.

Whom the Lord calls, the Lord qualifies. Those who he calls are blessed to have the right words, so long as they remain worthy to receive them. They are able to open their mouth and speak the words that the Lord wants them to speak. Joseph Smith said on more than one occasion that he was not mighty in words but the Lord promised him, as recorded in the doctrine and covenants: "It shall be given you in the very moment what you shall speak and what you shall write." There is no recorded evidence that he ever spoke from a prepared text!

I was called as the ward relief society president at 32 years old. I always assumed the RSP was someone in their 40s or 50s, or even older, not someone my age! Sorry Beth! In fact, at first I was absolutely convinced that my husband and bishop had set me up for a joke. When our stake RSP sat with me, I said. I can't do this. I'm so awkward. I always say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Her words were simple but perfect. “If you do the right thing and pray for the right words, you can open your mouth and they will come. And you can be assured that they will always be the right words.” I don’t think I’ve become any less awkward, but the words did come.

President Henry B Eyring shared a beautiful story about one young man's example of sustaining his Church leaders. “Years ago an 18-year-old student showed me what it means to sustain the Lord’s servants. I am still blessed by his humble example. He had just begun his first year in college. He was baptized less than a year before he left home to begin his studies at a large university. There I served as his bishop.

As the school year began, I had a brief interview with him in the bishop’s office. I remember little of that first conversation except that he spoke of his challenges in a new place, but I will never forget our second conversation. He asked to see me in my office. I was surprised when he said, “Could we pray together, and may I be voice?” I was about to say that I had already prayed and expected that he had as well. Instead I agreed. He began his prayer with a testimony that he knew the bishop was called of God. He asked God to tell me what he should do in a matter of great spiritual consequence. The young man told God he was sure the bishop already knew his needs and would be given the counsel he needed to hear. As he spoke, the specific dangers he would face came to my mind. The counsel was simple but given in great clarity: pray always, obey the commandments, and have no fear. That young man, one year in the Church, taught by example what God can do with a leader as he is sustained by the faith and prayers of those he is called to lead. I spoke recently with that young man who sustained his bishop years ago. I learned that the Lord and the people had sustained him in his call as a missionary, as a stake president, and as a father. He said as our conversation ended, “I still pray for you every day.”

We can support and help leaders of the Church both locally and on a larger scale by our faith and prayers on their behalf, by helping when they ask us, by accepting callings extended to us and most importantly, by following their counsel.

May I leave you with an encouragement to not only sustain your church leaders, but to take opportunities to tell them that you do! If you like a talk someone gives, tell them. If you like a lesson, take the time out to let them know. If a leader goes out of their way to help you or your family, show your gratitude by telling them, then helping someone else. Our words mean so much. I cannot tell you how much it means to me when people have sustained me in my calling. Sometimes people I would least expect!

I’d just like to leave this talk with a final poem by Charles Franklin Benvegar that my friend Alexandra gave me as a teenager, that explains the power of our words and deeds. She would often ask us, are you a Builder? Or a wrecker?

As I watched them tear a building down

A gang of men in a busy town

With a ho-heave-ho, and a lusty yell

They swung a beam and the side wall fell

I asked the foreman, “Are these men skilled,

And the men you’d hire if you wanted to build?”

He gave a laugh and said, “No, indeed,

Just common labor is all I need.”

“I can easily wreck in a day or two,

What builders have taken years to do.”

And I thought to myself, as I went my way

Which of these roles have I tried to play

Am I a builder who works with care,

Measuring life by rule and square?

Am I shaping my work to a well-made plan

Patiently doing the best I can

Or am I a wrecker who walks to town

Content with the labour of tearing down?

“O Lord let my life and my labours be

That which will build for eternity!”

Brothers and sisters. Sustain your leaders. Be a builder, not a wrecker. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Baby shower cake

At it again today, making a baby shower cake for one of Madeline's wonderful Young Womens leaders. She is not long off having her first baby - a little boy and the girls decided to surprise her with a little Baby Shower for tonight's activity.

It was a hell of an undertaking, as it's been so hot! Nothing would stick, or set and honestly I was about to give up. But in the end, this simple semi naked vanilla cake, with tinted buttercream, rosettes and sprinkles did the trick.

And there was not a single piece left, so it was obviously good. My favourite no fail vanilla cake can be found here.

Giles Faction Captain!

The results are in and Miss Madeline is the Giles Faction Captain for 2023! She is so beyond thrilled and you could not wipe the smile off of her face. I must admit, I thought she would be a little disappointed not getting head girl, but she assured me she is so happy!

A lovely friend of ours made her a lolly lei for the occasion as she was so convinced she would end up with a leadership role and I'm so happy she did, as it added to her joy.

Her co-captain Elliot and her have been friends since they were very small and are so excited to be in this together - but the funniest part of the day was when their principal had a bit of a chuckle when he handed over their badges and told them they had better not mess it up! They are big shoes to fill - Giles has won the carnival for the 6 of the 7 years we've been at ESPS and I think the last time we lost, Madeline was in Pre-Primary!

So stoked for them! Obviously her jokes about being born red, ready for the job paid off hahah.

We are so grateful for Maddie's lovely teacher Mr. Dean who encouraged her to run for faction captain, as originally she was only going to go for the top spot. I'm glad he was at her about it and I bet she is too!

Eight very happy kids with Faction Captain hats - and four of them in Madeline's class. What a party it will be. To make it sweeter, the head boy and girl and both the prefects are good friends of hers too and she couldn't be happier for them. It's was a great day!

Head girl/ faction captain elections

Maddie is going for the big leagues and has her eye set on being head girl. Who am I to discourage her? She is smart, funny and very popular, so I can't see why she doesn't have a good chance of getting it. I have said to her multiple times, don't be too disappointed if you don't get it - to which she responded, ummm why would I not? haha That's my girl. I would be so set in life if I even had a small part of her confidence! We made up her poster which is proudly hanging outside her classroom and she got to work on her speech, which they will deliver next week. Fingers crossed!

Good morning Ellen Stirling students and staff. My name is Madeline Kendall and I’d love to be your head girl for 2023.

I have attended Ellen Stirling Primary School since kindergarten. This is my eighth year at this school! Over the years I have watched the school grow and change and I have grown myself, alongside so many of you. I am so lucky to count so many of you as my friends.

What makes a good leader? Me, Madeline Kendall. Someone who is willing to include others in all things, all the time. Someone who puts the needs of others above their own. I feel certain I am those things. I am someone who is kind and caring to everyone and I am willing to take time out of my day to help you if you need anything. With me as your head girl, you can be assured I’ll always look out for you. I love to be around others and love to make new friends. If you’re new and don’t know me yet, come and say hello!

I have always tried my hardest to be a positive role model amongst my peers and younger students. I feel like this is the most important part of being head girl, being a good example to others. I always attend school and am ready and willing to fulfil all the responsibilities of Head Girl.

I am not going to stand here and pretend to be a different person to what I usually am. What you see is that you get with Madeline Kendall. I am going to make a difference here at Ellen Stirling Primary School by listening to all your opinions and needs. Together we can be the difference that this school needs. Sharing things helps us be better. No guys, this doesn’t mean sharing your answers during a test… What it really means is to share the problems you have and together we can solve them. I believe I am perfect for the role of head girl because I am caring, confident, mature, and reliable as well as friendly and approachable. You can come and talk to me anywhere, anytime and I will always listen to what you have to say.

As head girl you must be ready to take on a big responsibility and I know I’m the person for the job. So vote 1 for Madeline Kendall because you have excellent taste and superb decision making skills! Thank you!

She's also been encouraged by her teacher Mr. Dean to go for faction captain. It wasn't something she was originally interested in, but she's giving it a go too. She and Ella even decided to make a joint poster as they are in separate factions and aren't in direct competition with each other. Both their teachers thought it was hilarious and when I printed their poster at Officeworks, the guy behind the counter actually said, "Now this is cool. Something different. I'd vote for them!" Legend. I actually think it's the coolest thing ever. They definitely are in everything together.

Her faction captain speech is a bit more casual which I love, she's a lot less worried about it. Has me cracking up. Play to your strengths hey!

Good morning Ellen Stirling Students and Staff. My name is Madeline Kendall and I would love to be your Giles faction captain for 2023. Having attended this school since Kindergarten, I’ve been involved in so many carnivals and I am so very proud to be in Giles. In fact, I clearly was put in the right faction, cause I don’t even need to spray my hair for the carnival. You can’t get much redder than red!

I would make an amazing faction captain, because I see the best in people and encourage them to do the same. I love all kinds of sports and am always willing to try a new kind as the opportunity arises. I am resilient and I keep going till the last whistle blows. As a good Leader, I want to bring glory to my team!

I will use my strengths to help others and ensure no one is left out. I sometimes push people to their limit, but that’s only because I want them to go further than they think they can. That’s why I will always encourage teamwork. Teamwork makes the dream work.

People describe me as a person that never gives up no matter what and wants her voice to be heard. As the Giles faction captain I’ll make sure everyone gets a chance in what they can do best. I’d like to show everyone that strength isn’t always a requirement to be a leader. I want you all to know that if you are feeling discouraged, that I’m always here to talk and give you a cheer, in a big, loud and confident voice that will bring your spirits up.

I believe that this could be a great opportunity for me to practice my leadership skills, lead my team to victory and support others. So vote 1 for me! Madeline Kendall, for Giles Faction Captain. Cause I’m actually red and perfect for the job! GO GILES!

Maddie's temple talk

Last week Maddie went to the temple for the first time - this Sunday they had her give her first sacrament talk! Time, please slow down! My little girl is growing up way too fast. She did an amazing job and I am so proud of her!

***************

Good morning brothers and sisters.

This morning I have been asked to speak about my first experience at the temple. This year I will be turning 12, which means I now have the opportunity to serve in the temple by doing baptisms and confirmations for people who have passed on. On Friday night, along with the other youth in our ward, I attended the temple for the first time.

Although at first I was nervous and a little unsure, I felt so peaceful when I entered the temple. It was so quiet! It’s nice to be in a place where you can sit and think with no other noise. It was such a wonderful experience to be there with people I love, reassuring me as we did our session together.

Many people are not given the opportunity to enter the waters of baptism as they live on this earth. We are given the chance to provide them a way to be baptised as we do work on their behalf.

Each temple has the words, holiness to the lord, the house of the lord, written above the entry and I know that the temple is a place of peace, the place we can be closest to our Heavenly Father on this earth.

President Spencer W. Kimball once said, “It would be a fine thing if parents would have in every bedroom in their house a picture of the temple so their children from the time they are infants could look at the picture every day until it becomes a part of their lives. When they reach the age that they need to make the very important decision concerning going to the temple, it will have already been made.

I am so blessed to know that I belong to an eternal family. My parents were married in the Perth temple and both sets of my grandparents were sealed in the New Zealand temple long before I was born. I love knowing that when our time on earth is done, we will all be together again. It’s especially comforting to know this as my dads parents have both passed away. I know it will be amazing spending forever with my family.

In primary we learned the song, I love to see the temple.
I love to see the temple
I'm going there someday
To feel the holy spirit
To listen and to pray
For the temple is a house of God
A place of love and beauty
I'll prepare myself while I am young
This is my sacred duty

I love to see the temple
I'll go inside someday
I'll covenant with my Father
I'll promise to obey
For the temple is a holy place
Where we are sealed together
As a child of God, I've learned this truth
A family is forever

The world today is a really hard place to grow up. There are so many things placed in our way that can drag us down. But as we attend the temple and remember the promises we make within, we will be more able to bear every challenge and to overcome each problem. I am so grateful for a temple close by and to know of the blessings that come from being part of a forever family.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Rice Krispy Treats/ LCMs/ Rainbow lunchbox bars

Our kids are obsessed with LCMs, but they seem so expensive when I buy a pack and they all get eaten within a day or two. I have American friends who used to make them all the time (huge thing there - aka Rice Krispy Treats) and I have made them a few times over the years, but I decided with school starting up again soon, now was the time to find a decent recipe. Taste.com.au delivered...

Rainbow lunchbox bars

75g butter
250g marshmallows
6 cups rice bubbles
1/2 cup mini m&ms
1 tbsp sprinkles

1. Grease and line the base of a 20x30cm pan, allowing paper to hang over the sides
2. Combine butter and marshmallows in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir as they melt for 5 or so minutes until there are no lumps and the mixture is smooth.
3. Pour the rice bubbles, chunky sprinkles and m&m's into the marshmallow mixture and stir until all well combined. Pour into prepared pan and use the back of a metal spoon to press down, smoothing and compacting the surface. Set in fridge for a few hours, then slice into bars for serving.

They are absolutely delicious and some nice and bright fun. I have a feeling they'll be on repeat this year!

Orange and Poppyseed Cake

It's Ross's birthday!

Which means it's time to make a cake other than chocolate - and it better be good cause he's a chef and may potentially judge me. haha.

This years offering was a great find on taste.com.au

ORANGE AND POPPYSEED CAKE

50g butter

1 tbsp finely grated orange rind

  • 1 cup caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 2 tbsp poppyseeds
  • 1/3 cup reduced-fat milk

  • Method:
  • Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Grease and line tins
  • Place butter, orange rind, sugar, eggs, flour, poppyseeds and milk in a bowl and stir to combine.
  • Spoon into tins and bake for 35-40 mins.
  • Dust with icing sugar and serve - OR

  • Icing:
  • 55g cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1 cup icing sugar
  • Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth, then add vanilla and icing sugar.

Amazing with the icing, we loved it! But seriously had no idea there would be no orange juice in it! Just rind?! Okay... but it was still more than orangey enough. Weird!

Definitely a tradition I'll keep up, I am sure there are plenty of non chocolate cakes I can make it through in the years to come.

Happy Birthday Ross!

Primary Graduates 2022

These awesome kids are off to youth in a few short weeks! Because Christmas Day is a Sunday this year and we don't have classes, we celebrated them today with a little send off. Each of them had to give a little talk about what they loved in Primary and what they are looking forward to in the youth program. There was some very random answers which made it even more amusing.

I will 100% miss having my mini in Primary, she was so good at crowd control and telling people to shut up haha, but was also amazing at knowing all the answers, encouraging the smaller kids to speak up and most of all, singing. She knew the words and would sing loudly! What are we going to do without her? My baby girl is off!

Mia's Birthday

'

Happy Birthday to our beautiful friend Mia! I love any excuse to make a cake, so this one was a vanilla cake with buttercream icing and some little decorations. Mia is always smiling and happy so I thought sunshine yellow was a perfect fit.

With rainbows and flowers

We went for a swim at The Vines Resort pool first then enjoyed cake afterwards. A great afternoon!

Dance Concert Professional Shots

One of the most wonderful parts of the dance concert is having the chance to relive it all over again when the photographs become available for purchase - and then one last time when the video is sent out. I love looking through the shots and although they are very expensive, I always get a few... and may have gone a little crazy this year.

I loved this lyrical troupe dance so much. It was so graceful and emotional.

I 100% cried when Maddie was lifted up, almost as if she was flying above the others. I'm such a sook.

So, so beautiful!

Their senior ballet class this year performed a routine where the younger girls were waiters. They had giggled so much about the costumes and eventually suggested to their teacher that she get them moustaches. It was too cute for words. Our first year without a tutu or flowy skirt, but I thought this dance was amazing with such a good story.

Little waiter Madeline.

Dancing with your best friends is always the best part.

Jazz troupe was just the most powerful epic dance and I am so sad that it will only ever be done once and never make it to competitions. They just absolutely owned the stage and I loved every second of it.

Our girl, constantly front and center.

She's just an absolute doll.

I just love this photo of her and Madison, it is everything you need to know about them, when it comes to dance, they will not be separated or beaten, at anything. haha.

Madeline took on a second jazz class this year with some of the older girls and loved it. Sub-senior Jazz. This dance was awesome. So glad she decided to do it.

She is amazing! I could seriously watch her all the time.

I showed a few of these shots to Jakes mum afterwards and we had a laugh together, apparently he had been bragging the day after the concert to anyone that would listen about how awesome his girlfriend was is and how she had won a trophy at the concert and so on. Yep. We know. She's pretty amazing! So proud to be her mum. ❤

Alexander is 4!

FOUR YEARS OLD!
How I've actually managed to keep this one alive is a mystery to me. He is fun, full of giggles and the cuddliest. I must admit that him being 3cms from me at all times is not always my favourite thing, but we roll with it.

He loved opening his presents yesterday

including this gorgeous personalised Alex blanket

and of course more Bluey clothes. Just for something different. Haha.

I love his whacky sense of humour and hearing his little laugh.

But most of all his little smile 😍

There are always plenty of Alex selfies on my camera roll, including this one which was definitely worth preserving.

He's our little nutter and we wouldn't change him for anything.

So, so loved by his big sister - and he would follow her anywhere she wanted to go.

The cutest little man. Our Alexander James. ❤

Happy birthday to my littlest love!
