Grandma's garden

One of the things I loved the most at my grandparents was their garden. So when we left I carefully took some cuttings, to plant at my new house. I'd love to keep their garden growing for yet another generation to enjoy.

Today I planted it all in pots at the new house. Will all the rain forecasted, I am hoping they will take to the soil and start to grow for me here.

From the back door

The front garden, the bush near the driveway

and the front of the house on the carport side

and these rose clippings from the one remaining (incredibly overgrown) rosebush in the backyard. I hope they'll bring some happiness to my life. ❤

Goodbye to Grandads house

My grandparents house has finally been sold and is going to be demolished in the coming months for a development on the land. Mum and dad went to have one last look and to see if there was anything else they wanted before that happened.

We went along with them, for a squiz and also so Douglas could help dad remove the awning that was over the back door, which mum plans to hang over her she shed entry way.

Oh my word. What a bloody mess. Turns out the Real Estate agent had not conducted an inspection for many many years and the house and the yard and basically everywhere was trashed. The carpets looked like someone had dragged a car engine over them, there was a hole in the wall in one of the bedrooms, flyscreens completely gone on lots of the windows, the bathroom window was broken and couldn't close... down that side of the house looked like a garbage tip, and I just cannot believe that someone would take their job so completely not seriously and have that to their name. It was ridiculous.

It was truly sad seeing my grandparents house like that for the last time, but it really doesn't matter. Obviously if they were still here, it wouldn't be that way! The backyard is completely overgrown too and I feel really sad to think of how lovely it was. All neat and tidy, the Hills Hoist ready to swing on, and our little metal tricycle with the back seat for a passenger, being ridden up and down the garden path. That backyard seemed to go on forever when I was a child. There was always something to do and look at, before coming back to the safety of my grandparents.

The doors for the wood sheds down the side of the backyard were wide open, from my brothers and dad collecting things that they wanted to keep. They have always been closed and not accessible by any of the tenants. I remember that was where I would always find my grandfather, in there working away at something. Rockinghorses, stools (believe me, they are indestructible. Mine is still going strong 30 something years later.) and sling shots made from Y branches in a tree. I remember walking around the farm at my parents with him once and him keeping a well trained eye out for any he could take home and fashion into another one for his grandkids and the kids he liked at church.

His old almond tree still stood strong and immovable after all these years, now strung with fairy lights with a long abandoned table underneath.

It was when I walked through this door however that I was taken back to my childhood. This room, seemingly untouched since then (although it obviously was... he died after Doug and I were married) which still smelled exactly the same to me. I felt a rush of emotions and teared up, remembering all my innocent childhood conversations with one of the people who has meant the most to me. I would give so much for another hour with that man, just one more hug.

I loved seeing this little good luck spot on the cupboard door, complete with a lucky penny and horseshoe and his painting.

A bunch of little sea creatures, so appropriate for Fremantle.

I loved this place, his home, so very much.

So these photos are to remind me, in years to come, that he was here. That he was wonderful and that I have wonderful memories of a childhood spent being so loved by my grandparents.

My grandma used to try and get me to nap when I was a small child and she would watch me very  occasionally, and cover me with one of her crocheted rugs (there was so many, made with love and gifted to her grandkids - I still have mine!), on their big bed. They had a large wooden wardrobe and I remember my grandfather always having musk lifesavers stashed away and sneaking us into the bedroom to give us one. I will also never forget, the day of my grandmothers funeral, as a small girl, coming into his room and seeing him cry. My little six year old self, telling him it would be alright and giving him a hug. Who even knows if it happened that way, but that's how I remember it.

I remember sitting on the back step with him in his flannel hat. Pushing the brim up and down and letting the sun shine into his piercing blue eyes as he made faces to make me giggle.

I spent a moment admiring this wall and asked my dad about it when he came in. Apparently grandads signature move was to use the dregs of his paint tins to colour the wall bit by bit and all these years later, it's made a gorgeous picture.

I told mum a few years ago, one time I wandered in and he was busily making a stool, with the name JADE carved on the front. I asked if it was for me and he assured me it was for another little girl called Jade. Not long after for a birthday or Christmas (both the same when you are me! haha) it appeared. It's the one mentioned above, painted light pink and being loved and used daily still as a step in my pantry.

Even back then, you had to carefully go into the second shed and duck around the piles of wood. I am sure he used every piece he could, but there's still enough for a lifetime and then some.

As one last point of entertainment, my grandmother let me help her with the vacuuming once when I was very small. I pushed the machine over the rug in the lounge room, pushing the fibres in the wrong direction and making it look all askew. I was so upset and was kneeling on the ground trying desperately to push them back into place when she found me a few minutes later, she had a good laugh and assured me that there was nothing damaged.

Farewell little house. You were so very loved by everyone who entered in.

Many, many years ago my mother cross stitched a small sampler which used to hang by my grandparents front door. I have it now and it's hung in my Nollamara house, this house and will hang again in my new home.

Bless this house Oh Lord we pray.
Keep it safe both night and day.
Bless each corner brick and rafter.
Keep it filled with love and laughter.

There was so much love and laughter in this precious home. I am so grateful to have been blessed with a grandparents who had so much love to give. ❤

b-i-n-g-o!

dougs sister is here from the u.s. for a few months and has been spending all her time spoiling my kids rotten, as all good aunties do! we went to k-mart last week chasing a bingo set for them to play and oh my gosh has she got them hooked. they are so into it, ever so carefully checking their numbers and making sure that they haven't missed a thing. it even got worse when she brought prizes to kick the game up a notch... it was all out war. butttt, we are having the time of our lives and i love watching them giggle and play together. bingo is the bomb.

please note, joseph was so excited that he spun the wheel far too fast and flung a pile of the balls off the table, one of them a little too far, resulting in us not being able to play as we didn't know which one it was... luckily it was found the next day.

bingo is onnnnn at the kendall house.

click here for a list of all the number descriptions for you all to play along at home. believe me, you'll love it! it's a great family game. our set was $9.50 from kmart australia

a holiday at nannas

we went to nanna's for a holiday at the end of last week. it was all getting a bit much for me with these three and i needed some time out, so up to nannas we went. not before i got this absolute pearler of a picture, with madeline telling me just how hard it was to have three kids. oh girrrrrrl. if only you knew. but it did crack me up. (look carefully and you'll see her third "baby" in the pram. i was super impressed that she got an umbrella to shade the sun off of alex too! good girl.

we went into toodyay for a look at the opshop and the quickest play ever at the park on saturday morning

but it was hot as and there isn't much to do out in the country. my clever mum had suggested i bring the little pool with us, that was an absolute life saver. the kids played with it for hours

- and set up in the carport, it was even in the shade!

alex got to have a snooze, i got another adult to talk to, wins all round!

and baby alex got to sleep the night in a washing basket. cause why not?! this baby is just too cute. ♥

poppy’s birthday

we are so lucky to have doug's parents living close to us. it's a 8 minute drive between our houses and the kids love it, as we can just drop around whenever we like. it also means they've able to grow up seeing their grandma and poppy a few times a week.

as much as the kids love to tease steve and call him grumpy old poppy, we know they love him like crazy and love to be around him. he has a great sense of humour and is a lot of fun.

last night we celebrated the old man getting a little bit older, with family dinner, followed by cuddles from the kids and cake. what's better than that?! ♥

lite n easy open day

today the kids spent the morning at lite n' easy in canning vale, at the annual "bring your kids to work day", checking out where grandma oli works. with a treasure hunt, face (well arm) painting and a sausage sizzle, i think it's safe to say they had a good time. plus... they finally got to see where grandma works, which was the best bit for the two of them!

anzac day parade

madeline's school had their anzac day parade today. she came home earlier in the week, telling me excitedly about how she needed a flower for their class wreath... and about the anzac book that their teacher had read to the class. i know that she's not quite old enough to understand really what war is about,  but then can any of us that haven't experienced it really understand?

she stood still while i pinned these medals to her dress (which i can assure you did not go to school for the parade) for a picture to remember today, and then peppered me with questions about my grandparents as she held their picture. my grandfather, joseph goodlet fought in world war two and those medals belonged to him. war was something he never wanted to speak of and i know it's something that stayed with him long after the war was over... for the rest of his life.

i am so, so grateful for the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. who saw things that will never be forgotten... and who bravely stood up and left their lives behind, so that we can have what we have today. we are blessed beyond measure.

lest we forget

they shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old
age shall not weary them, or the years condemn
at the going down of the sun, and in the morning
we will remember them
lest we forget

95 years old, but still here in our hearts

95 years ago today this amazing man was born. my grandfather joseph goodlet. although he passed away in 2007, he is never far from my thoughts. he was one of my dearest and trusted friends and it seemed only natural to name my little one after him when he arrived 2 years ago.

i sometimes wonder if he would be proud of decisions i have made, things i've done, where i am at in my life... and if he would love to get to know that little blonde boy that is running around the place with his name. and tonight i feel like i got my answer.

doug and i decided to go to the temple this evening and as the session came to a close, near the end i started to think of him and felt such great peace. i know that he's happy. that he's happy with his family and i know most of all that the day will come when we will be together again. what great joy the gospel brings. i feel such comfort knowing that families are forever and love that one day i'll be able to get to know him even better.

we still miss you grandad, after all these years. so god be with you 'til we meet again.

clackline day trip

it was my dad's birthday yesterday so i took the kids up to visit for the day... i always love going to clackline, there's just something about going home. madeline loves the same things i loved when i was a kid... running around the verandahs, looking at everything and "driving" up the gravel roads. (on someone's lap of course).  i'm so glad that my children have the chance to be country kids, even though we aren't living there.

i especially love the old lion monument... watching her climb up and down it all by herself is adorable... in her ninja turtle shirt that my mum bought for her.

(side note, this girls is obsessed with the ninja turtles. she has a baby doll that she has named raphael the ninja turtle. not just raphael, you have to say raphael the ninja turtle, that she takes everywhere. to the shops, to church, to bed... it is the funniest! i love hearing her introduce him to people. this is my baby her name is raphael, raphael the ninja turtle.hahahaha)

joseph also had a hair cut while we were visiting nanna... he has been okay every other time, but this time he was completely unimpressed and screamed his face off the entire time mum was trying to cut. in the end she gave up, and he has a few pieces that are messy and all over the place, it looks a little like he went a few rounds with a lawn mower above his right ear.

poor love, i am just hoping he is not traumatised for life... otherwise we are going to not be enjoying ourselves during future hair cuts. i couldn't resist sharing this photo though, although he is so upset, he looks so darn cute!

maddie's birthday week

dougs parents arrived in perth last night, so seeing as they missed madeline's birthday by just 2 days, it seemed fitting that another cake and candles were in order...

we found a hello kitty cake at the local coles, and amazingly enough it was delicious!

she was thrilled to have her birthday extended by a few more days (she will learn in time that the goodlet family [- my side] love to celebrate birthday week, not birthday day) and grinned away as we say happy birthday to her and she got to open even more gifts. spoiled girl! i have learned in time that although the word i automatically jump to in my head is spoiled, that i need to reword it and say loved. madeline is very, very loved. especially seeing as she was stephen and oli's first grandchild... nothing could stop them loving her

well there you have it sweet girl. it's all over for another year... you'll have to start talking about your 5th birthday now haha ♥

best grandparents in the world

i truly feel like i have been blessed with the best parents in the world. as i am in brisbane trying my hardest to be helpful, to pack and clean and sort, my little girl had to stay home with my parents. the tickets to brisbane are expensive, i would be so busy and she needs so much time and attention that it was simply just going to be too hard. so i left... and left her with my parents.

i cried at the airport, she has cried a lot since... and so have i. she is such a huge part of me. she is basically just that... me. but smaller. same chatty personality...

i miss her dark eyes, her sweet hugs - and her obsession for trying to snuggle as close to me as is physically possible. i love her so much and it is so hard to be away from her.

but i know she is not only safe, but having a good time with her nanna and grandad. mum sends me photos of her doing everything you can think of... and she is always smiling. they had a hard time at the beginning, as madeline told them the second night she was there through tears that she needed to go home because her daddy was waiting for her and would miss her! thankfully she eventually announced that she would stay and has been fine since...

except for a few times that mummy has called and she has cried and asked me when i am coming to take her home. thank goodness for my sweet parents who have kept her busy so she hasn't had much time to miss me... and have dutifully run her home to her dad at the weekends.

hold in there my sweet girl! mummy will be home soon... and i won't leave you again!

(photos courtesy of my mums ipad... sent to me daily. thanks mum, you're a gem)

clackline trip

i've just come home last night from staying at my parents house with the kids. doug was having a long work week and we had nothing planned, so a trip to the country it was. we opshopped our way up to clackline, stopping a few times and found some awesome stuff. what can i say? my mother taught me everything i know... and she is still my favourite person to go opshopping with. the best.

the kids always love going up to clackline, the space, the quiet, the trees and most of all, having their grandparents at their beckon call. maddie ran around non stop on the verandahs and in the yard, loving every minute. no wonder she slept so soundly at night.

on friday we went for a drive to york to check out the salvation army jumble sale and then stopped in at my friend keryn's house, a few kms out of york. we talk constantly, yet rarely see each other and the last time i saw her son (who is two) was as a fairly newborn, maybe just a few months old - and the same with her and joseph, so funny - both times we have just randomly run into each other in a shopping centre.

our kids got along pretty well though and played pretty nicely together, considering it was the first time they had met each other... the best bit though, was that they both have bright red hair, in exactly the same shade. too, too funny.

we had a nice little catch up and she even gave us brownies for the road!i am a complete and utter brownie snob/addict and i thought they were amazing! so if you haven't tried the adriano zumbo bake at home pack, go and get yourself one from the local supermarket and get baking. i tell you, they are worth it, no matter how much they cost!

and saturday? we had a nice old browse at the northam markets by the river... they are very much a trash and treasure style... with lots of vintage and secondhand items, as well as a few handmade. i liked it a lot and will definitely go again next time we are at mums, maddie had the time of her life there, playing in the water playground and having her pretty little face painted like a butterfly.

it was all over too soon, when doug arrived to get us last night, but we were pleased to see him, of course and be sleeping in our own beds. there is nothing better in the world than grandparents and we are so glad to have been made so welcome! ♥
